Vibration Control of Active Structures: An Introduction (Solid Mechanics and Its Applications) Feature

This text is an introduction to the dynamics of active structures and to the feedback control of lightly damped flexible structures; the emphasis is placed on basic issues and simple control strategies that work. Now in its third edition, more chapters have been added, and comments and feedback from readers have been taken into account, while at the same time the unique premise of bridging the gap between structure and control has remained.  Many examples and problems bring the subject to life and take the audience from theory to practice. The book has chapters dealing with some concepts in structural dynamics; electromagnetic and piezoelectric transducers; piezoelectric beam, plate and truss; passive damping with piezoelectric transducers; collocated versus non-collocated control; active damping with collocated systems; vibration isolation; state space approach; analysis and synthesis in the frequency domain; optimal control; controllability and observability; stability; applications; tendon control of cable structures; active control of large telescopes; and semi-active control. The book concludes with an exhaustive bibliography and index.   This book is intended for structural engineers who want to acquire some background in vibration control; it can be used as a textbook for a graduate course on vibration control or active structures. A solutions manual is available through the publisher to teachers using this book as a textbook.

Boundary and Mixed Lubrication: Science and Applications, Volume 40 (Tribology and Interface Engineering)

Boundary and Mixed Lubrication: Science and Applications, Volume 40 (Tribology and Interface Engineering) Review

Boundary and Mixed Lubrication: Science and Applications, Volume 40 (Tribology and Interface Engineering) Feature

The objective of the 28th Leeds-Lyon Symposium on Tribology was to define current understanding of the science relating to boundary and mixed lubrication and to compare this with the needs of industry in terms of applications.

Major advances have been made in recent years in areas such as contact mechanics, wear, elastohydrodynamic lubrication incorporating surface texture, lubricant interactions with surfaces and the experimental interrogation of surface topography, surface films and lubricant film thickness. However, the needs of industry are equally intense with a seemingly relentless drive towards more compact, efficient and durable tribological systems.

Boundary and Mixed Lubrication: Science and Applications publishes peer-reviewed papers presented at the 28th Leeds-Lyon Symposium on Tribology. The Keynote address was presented by Professor Koji Kato, Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan under the title "Wear of Boundary or Mixed Lubrication Regimes", which set the scene for the meeting with a review of recent scientific developments with a clear focus on the potential for technological and industrial development.

Advances in Fractional Calculus: Theoretical Developments and Applications in Physics and Engineering

Advances in Fractional Calculus: Theoretical Developments and Applications in Physics and Engineering Review

Advances in Fractional Calculus: Theoretical Developments and Applications in Physics and Engineering Feature

In the last two decades, fractional (or non integer) differentiation has played a very important role in various fields such as mechanics, electricity, chemistry, biology, economics, control theory and signal and image processing. For example, in the last three fields, some important considerations such as modelling, curve fitting, filtering, pattern recognition, edge detection, identification, stability, controllability, observability and robustness are now linked to long-range dependence phenomena. Similar progress has been made in other fields listed here. The scope of the book is thus to present the state of the art in the study of fractional systems and the application of fractional differentiation.

As this volume covers recent applications of fractional calculus, it will be of interest to engineers, scientists, and applied mathematicians.

Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing: Applications and Techniques for Use in Design: Manufacturing, and Inspection (Dekker Mechanical Engineering)

Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing: Applications and Techniques for Use in Design: Manufacturing, and Inspection (Dekker Mechanical Engineering) Review

Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing: Applications and Techniques for Use in Design: Manufacturing, and Inspection (Dekker Mechanical Engineering) Feature

Explaining the symbology of dimensioning and tolerancing and introducing a step-by-step system for geometric definition, this book provides examples for the application of geometric controls. The author breaks down the language of geometric product definition into a series of steps that consist of significant questions to be asked at any point in the product definition. He addresses functional requirements and manufacturing techniques, measurement, inspection, and gaging procedures. The book illustrates how symbology is best utilized, in what order it should be applied, and how each geometric control anticipates, integrates, and complements all other geometric controls on a part and in an assembly.

Geometric Modelling: Theoretical and Computational Basis Towards Advanced CAD Applications Feature

Geometric modelling has been an important and interesting subject for many years from the purely mathematical and computer science viewpoint, and also from the standpoint of engineering and various other applications, such as CAD/CAM, entertainment, animation, and multimedia. This book focuses on the interaction between the theoretical foundation of geometric modelling and practical applications in CAD and related areas.
Geometric Modelling: Theoretical and Computational Basis towards Advanced CAD Applications starts with two position papers, discussing basic computational theory and practical system solutions. The well-organized seven review papers give a systematic overview of the current situation and deep insight for future research and development directions towards the reality of shape representation and processing. They discuss various aspects of important issues, such as geometric computation for space search and shape generation, parametric modelling, feature modelling, user interface for geometric modelling, geometric modelling for the Next Generation CAD, and geometric/shape standard. Other papers discuss features and new research directions in geometric modelling, solid modeling, free-form surface modeling, intersection calculation, mesh modeling and reverse engineering. They cover a wide range of geometric modelling issues to show the problem scope and the technological importance.
Researchers interested in the current status of geometric modelling research and developments will find this volume to be an essential reference.
