Mechanics of Offshore Pipelines: Volume 1 Buckling and Collapse Feature

Offshore oil and gas production was conducted throughout the entire 20th century, but the industry's modern importance and vibrancy did not start until the early 1970s, when the North Sea became a major producer. Since then, the expansion of the offshore oil industry has been continuous and rapid.
Pipelines, and more generally long tubular structures, are major oil and gas industry tools used in exploration, drilling, production, and transmission. Installing and operating tubular structures in deep waters places unique demands on them. Technical challenges within the field have spawned significant research and development efforts in a broad range of areas.
Volume I addresses problems of buckling and collapse of long inelastic cylinders under various loads encountered in the offshore arena. Several of the solutions are also directly applicable to land pipelines. The approach of Mechanics of Offshore Pipelines is problem oriented. The background of each problem and scenario are first outlined and each discussion finishes with design recommendations.

* New and classical problems addressed - investigated through a combination of experiments and analysis
* Each chapter deals with a specific mechanical problem that is analyzed independently
* The fundamental nature of the problems makes them also applicable to other fields, including tubular components in nuclear reactors and power plants, aerospace structures, automotive and civil engineering structures, naval vehicles and structures

Tribological Research and Design for Engineering Systems: Proceedings of the 29th Leeds-Lyon Symposium (Tribology and Interface Engineering) Feature

These papers represent the proceedings from the 29th Leeds-Lyon Symposium on Tribology, 'Tribological Research and Design for Engineering Systems' which was held in September 2002. Over 130 delegates from 18 countries attended the symposium, and the extensive discussions generated over 150 written questions and responses, which are documented at the end of this proceedings volume.

There have been many advances in the field of tribology in recent years, with progress being made in the engineering and interaction of surfaces; micro and nano-tribology; elastohydrodynamics; surface films; surface texture; tribochemistry; wear and life prediction; with both experimental and theoretical contributions. These advances were reviewed, and the impact of this understanding on the fundamentals upon total engineering activity in design, manufacture and machine operation were considered.

Coatings Tribology, Volume 56, Second Edition: Properties, Mechanisms, Techniques and Applications in Surface Engineering (Tribology and Interface Engineering) Feature

The surface coating field is a rapidly developing area of science and technology that offers new methods and techniques to control friction and wear. New coating types are continually being developed and the potential applications in different industrial fields are ever growing, ranging from machine components and consumer products to medical instruments and prostheses. This book provides an extensive review of the latest technology in the field, addressing techniques such as physical and chemical vapour deposition, the tribological properties of coatings, and coating characterization and performance evaluation techniques. Eleven different cases are examined in close detail to demonstrate the improvement of tribological properties and a guide to selecting coatings is also provided. This second edition is still the only monograph in the field to give a holistic view of the subject and presents all aspects, including test and performance data as well as insights into mechanisms and interactions, thus providing the level of understanding vital for the practical application of coatings.

* An extensive review of the latest developments in the field of surface coatings
* Presents both theory and practical applications
* Includes a guide for selecting coatings

Safety Factors and Reliability: Friends or Foes?

Safety Factors and Reliability: Friends or Foes? Review

See more picture

Safety Factors and Reliability: Friends or Foes? Feature

Have you ever wondered where the safety factors come from? Why is it that deterministic analysis has reached a very sophisticated level, but in the end empirical factors are still needed? Is there a way to select them, rather than assigning them arbitrarily as is often done?
This book clearly shows that safety factors are closely related with the reliability of structures, giving yet another demonstration of Albert Einstein's maxim that "It is incomprehensible that Nature is comprehensible". The book shows that the safety factors are much more comprehensible if they are seen in a probabilistic context. Several definitions of the safety factors are given, analytical results on insightful numbers are presented, nonprobabilistic safety factors are shown, as well as their estimates derived by the inequalities of Bienayme, Markov, Chebushev and Camp-Meidell. A special chapter is devoted to important contributions by Japanese experts.
This volume will help to critically re-think the issue of safety factors, which can create a false feeling of security. The deterministic paradigm can be enhanced by incorporating probabilistic concepts wisely where they are needed without treating all variables as probabilistic ones. The book shows that there is a need of their integration rather than separation.
This book is intended for engineers, graduate students, lecturers and researchers.

Friction and Wear of Materials Review

See more picture

Friction and Wear of Materials Feature

Friction and Wear of Materials Second Edition Written by one of the world's foremost authorities on friction, this classic book offers a lucid presentation of the theory of mechanical surface interactions as it applies to friction, wear, adhesion, and boundary lubrication. To aid engineers in design decisions, Friction and Wear of Materials evaluates the properties of materials which, under specified conditions, cause one material to function better as a bearing material than another. Featured also are thorough treatments of lubricants and the sizes and shapes of wear particles. This updated Second Edition includes new material on erosive wear, impact wear, and friction. Professor Rabinowicz's book will be especially welcomed by mechanical and design engineers, surface scientists, tribologists and others who design, produce and operate products, machines and equipment which involve friction and its effects.
