Tribology and Mechanics of Magnetic Storage Devices Feature

The increasing demand for high-density highly reliable magnetic recording requires a fundamental understanding of the tribology and mechanics of the interface between the magnetic head and the recording medium. This book offers a systematic compilation of current knowledge of tribology and mechanics as applied to magnetic storage devices. It treats all important practical aspects, including surface roughness, friction, interface temperatures, wear, lubrication, lubricants, and surface finishing. It incorporates ample experimental data and relevant properties of materials and surfaces, making the book invaluable for engineers and scientists working in the field. Intended for practicing engineers who need to solve reliability or tribology problems quickly, the book will also be useful for research workers, academic engineers, and graduate students in tribology and mechanics. Most of the theoretical results presented are broadly applicable in many areas of mechanical engineering. A chapter on microtribology of magnetic storage devices has been added in this second edition of the book.

From Knowledge Intensive CAD to Knowledge Intensive Engineering (IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology) Feature

IFIP Working Group 5.2 has organized a series of workshops extending the concept of intelligent CAD to the concept of "knowledge intensive engineering". The concept advocates that intensive life-cycle knowledge regarding products and design processes must be incorporated in the center of the CAD architecture. It focuses on the systematization and sharing of knowledge across the life-cycle stages and organizational boundaries.
From Knowledge Intensive CAD to Knowledge Intensive Engineering comprises the Proceedings of the Fourth Workshop on Knowledge Intensive CAD, which was sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and held in Parma, Italy in May 2000. This workshop looked at the evolution of knowledge intensive design for the product life cycle moving towards knowledge intensive engineering.
The 18 selected papers present an overview of the state-of-the-art in knowledge intensive engineering, discussing theoretical aspects and also practical systems and experiences gained in this area. An invited speaker paper is also included, discussing the role of knowledge in product and process innovation and technology for processing semantic knowledge.
Main issues discussed in the book are:

  • Architectures for knowledge intensive CAD;
  • Tools for knowledge intensive CAD;
  • Methodologies for knowledge intensive CAD;
  • Implementation of knowledge intensive CAD;
  • Applications of knowledge intensive CAD;
  • Evolution of knowledge intensive design for the life-cycle;
  • Formal methods.
The volume is essential reading for researchers, graduate and postgraduate students, systems developers of advanced computer-aided design and manufacturing systems, and engineers involved in industrial applications.

Transport Phenomena in Porous Media III Feature

Fluid and flow problems in porous media have attracted the attention of industrialists, engineers and scientists from varying disciplines, such as chemical, environmental, and mechanical engineering, geothermal physics and food science. There has been a increasing interest in heat and fluid flows through porous media, making this book a timely and appropriate resource.

Each chapter is systematically detailed to be easily grasped by a research worker with basic knowledge of fluid mechanics, heat transfer and computational and experimental methods. At the same time, the readers will be informed of the most recent research literature in the field, giving it dual usage as both a post-grad text book and professional reference.

Written by the recent directors of the NATO Advanced Study Institute session on 'Emerging Technologies and Techniques in Porous Media' (June 2003), this book is a timely and essential reference for scientists and engineers within a variety of fields.

Computational Kinematics (Solid Mechanics and Its Applications) Feature

This volume provides a state of the art account of developments in computational kinematics. Included are both numerical computations and symbolic manipulations. The volume reports on trends and progress in a broad class of problems, and the information is collated logically into six parts describing the main themes:
(i) kinematic algorithms, whereby general kinematic problems are discussed in light of their solution algorithms;
(ii) redundant manipulators;
(iii) kinematic and dynamic control in which the link between kinematics and the disciplines of dynamics and control is highlighted;
(iv) parallel manipulators;
(v) motion planning, touching on computational geometry;
(vi) kinematics of mechanisms describing the closed kinematic chains.
The volume contains a representative sample of the most modern techniques available for kinematics problems, including some novel techniques described for the first time in a book. It will be of interest to researchers, graduate students and practising engineers engaged in work relating to kinematics, robotics, machine design and computer science.
